CHEW ON THIS!

In my quest to be eating better, I've decided to start a new regular (hopefully) feature for the Backstage Pass Radio Program:  CHEW ON THIS!

I fancy myself to be a fairly good cook, but what I lack is inspiration.  When I know how to cook something, I can cook the hell out of it, but my repertoire is short.  I know there's ten gazillion new veggies and healthy ingredients out there, but I always gravitate to what I know in the grocery store. I need help, and that's where YOU come in.

Each week, I'm going to run a little contest on my Facebook and Twitter pages.  On Tuesdays, I'll post that the contest is open, and (hopefully!) you can suggest which new ingredient I cook with.  You can suggest any ingredient, as long as it's healthy and somewhat easy to find.  I will announce the winning ingredient and give out the recipe every Monday on the show.   Here are some simple guidelines:

• It should be healthy
• It should to be somewhat accessible for most people
• It should be low in sugar and fat for most WLS people
• Can be a vegetable, spice, herb, fruit, anything...but let's keep away from carbs (I wish!)

The winning suggestion will get:  1) A copy of my CD mailed to them  2) some other small weekly prize that will vary from week to week and 3) the recipe I create will be named after the reader who's suggestion I pick, and your recipe will go down in history in the "CHEW ON THIS!" section of my blog (forthcoming).  HOW. COULD. YOU. RESIST!?  (sarcasm)

Every time I look at this, I'm a little blown away.  Here Connie is - this super-busy media mogul, and she took the time to really work with me on what was going to best suit my skin care needs.  I got my very own laminated perscription sheet, and I have to tell you:  it's WORKING.

When I hit my late (ahem!) thirties, I started noticing really big changes in my skin - most notably, my forehead.  I have inherited a wrinkly forehead from my mother and father (thanks for the DNA, yo!) and it bothers me.  So much that I actually considered Botox - the only reason I opted out was because I can't really afford it.  So I'm pretty much open to trying ANYTHING at this point.

Note: yes, I know this is a superficial fixation.  I logically know it's not a big deal, but it bothers me. A lot. You may remember that I even had my sister-in-law cut bangs for me to hide it, but they've grown out, and I just like my hair at a longer length....so what's a girl to do?

Enter:  UNDEROLOGY.

I'll be honest, I haven't tried all the products yet, but the ones that I HAVE used are FAN-FREAKIN-TASTIC!   Here's what I've tried so far:

Gentle Foam Cleanser:  I use this daily in the morning and night, and it is definitely gentle, but also takes off my makeup (which you know I totally cake on every day).

Eye Give Up Eye Serum:  Most of you know that I am a bad sleeper, which results in dark circles and baggy undereyes.  This stuff is a MIRACLE IN A BOTTLE.  I swear by it.  I see almost instant results when I use it.  A teeny tiny bit goes a really long way.

HYDROXtreme Cream:  I use it both day and night as my moisturizer.  Nice and light (not oily or heavy, no smell (I get lots of smell-induced headaches, so this is PERFECT for me0, and I think my skin is looking much better these days.

Peptiage Mutlipeptide Serum:  This is the jackpot!  I've been using this specifically on my forehead and I see a HUGE difference.  Now, I'm not going to lie to you and say that my forehead is completely wrinkle-free, but it's GREATLY reduced now after almost a month of using it.

WANT PROOF?!  I've got it for you.   Here are two pictures of my forehead.  The first was taken in February 2011, the second today, on June 8th, 2011.  I tried to replicate the way my eyes were so that you could get the best representation of the changes.  I just did this now for this journal entry and uh, HOLY BEGEEZUS.  I didn't even realize how dramatic the difference was until just now:

HELP ME, HELP HER - JOPLIN TORNADO ASSISTANCE

I need your help, and I have to swallow my pride a bit to ask for it.  Yesterday, Melting Mama posted a link to and OH thread that just broke my heart:

"I work in Joplin, MO and live about 5 miles south of the city so I'm okay & all that I own is okay, but due to the EF-5 tornado hitting a densely populated area of Joplin, there's a tremendous need for all kinds of things.

There's been a call out for "super" plus size clothes that are desperately needed by a small handful of individuals who are pretty much wearing the same clothes they had on Sunday.  

In general, there's a HUGE amount of clothes that have been donated, but NOT really large-sized clothing pieces.

This one family is obese AND tall - some of the men are in the 7' tall range.  There are 3  men and 1 woman.  They need:

MEN:  
Shirts:  5XTall 
Pants:  54" X 38"
             44" x 36"
             34" x 38"
Shoes:  size 13 AND 16
 
WOMEN:  
Shirts:  4X
Pants: 28 Long if possible
Shoes size 10

I immediately jumped in to help because I have a ton of clothing from my "past life" just sitting in my basement - including undergarments and a lot of things that could really help get her through the summer.  My issue is?  When I started packing it all up, I realized he shipping was going to be INSANE.  And honestly?  I can't afford it.  After we just got back from Vegas, and me not working a couple weeks - we just can't swing the shipping right now.

But then I thought, i f I could get a few of my friends to donate towards shipping, we could all make this donation together.   Even a small donation of $ .50 would help!  And here's what I'll do:

• I'll pack up as much stuff as I can possibly send her, donations for shipping will be used ONLY to send her packages
• I will include a note of support from anyone who donates.  In a time like this when they've lost EVERYTHING, it may be nice to read notes of support from around the country to know that they're not alone.
• Any money left over from shipping will be donated directly towards the Red Cross efforts for Joplin, MO.

If you can make a tiny donation towards the shipping, I will get this out to her right at the beginning of the week, and will send her so much stuff, it'll be like Christmas.  :)   Many thanks for any help you can extend towards getting her these much-needed items!
